Mississippi 'Meh' Pie
After our recent, and positive, trip to Elmo's diner for peanut butter pie, a friend suggested we give their Mud Pie a shot. Now, judging by the title of this post, you probably have a fairly good idea about where I'm going with this... simply put, it was mediocre.
There really isn't much to a MMP. Chocolate + ice cream (or whip cream, depending on your fancy) + chocolate*more chocolate (this is a synergistic term that indicates our belief that the whole can and should be greater than the sum of its parts); and were success simply left to the first two components of this equation, this pie would have been top notch. However, the synergy hoped for in the last term of our model for successful pie just wasn't there, and the pie was lacking a... how you say... "je ne sais quoi." I think the word I'm looking for is 'flavour'
Of course, this isn't to say it wasn't good. Chocolate is rarely bad, and for going out for a quick sweet tooth fix, I suppose it did the trick. Nonetheless, I doubt ording the MMP will be a repeat event.

Sorry Maheer!
ReplyDeleteaww, sorry he led you astray!!
ReplyDeletewell, i am disappointed that you don't share my enthusiasm for the mud pie. however, i'm glad that you tried it.
ReplyDeletehere are some thoughts about our difference in opinions:
perhaps we have different approaches to dessert. i have no upper boundary when it comes to chocolate and sweetness, and i do enjoy the sheer volume of chocolate that comes with a mud pie.
it has been years since i've had the mud pie. perhaps it has gone down in quality. or perhaps the durham elmo's just makes it better than the carrboro elmo's.
i have also found that many of the foods i used to rave about are surprisingly not that good upon revisit. it could be that the maheer of old just didn't have enough food experience to truly judge excellence. upon introspection i have to reluctantly admit that the pie part of the mud pie lacks some "flavour," as you call it.
i think this matter will have to be settled the next time we visit you in nc. the mud pie will be retasted and the peanut butter pie will be evaluated. you may be right; the pb pie may be the victor. or we may have to agree to disagree. i look forward to the taste test.
sounds like a plan! And maybe a trip out the Durham Elmo's is in order, in the meantime...
ReplyDeleteI hearya though. I used to be a fan of spaghetti with ketchup. And now I see that's not actually a great combo. Oh wait. Nevermind. I still like Ketchup + pasta.
